Structural Integration

Structural Integration (SI) is a therapeutic process to help you find an efficient way to live in your body. It is a system of bodywork that focuses on the effects of gravity by working with layers of connective tissue or fascia. Fascia surrounds the muscles, bones, and organs. The continuous pull of gravity, the stress of daily life, and past injuries can pull the body out of alignment.

SI aligns the body by layering, lengthening, and realigning the fascia. As fascia is lengthened, more room is created and the muscles are able to work efficiently. The body moves into a structurally optimal position through an organized method of touch and movement education. This work may lead to physical, emotional, and psychological change. When a body is aligned it functions with ease.

Helping to heal naturally

The body naturally wants to organize and heal itself and SI helps this process. When the body becomes misaligned, the fascia gradually shortens, tightens, and adjusts to the imbalance. This creates inefficiency in the body that results in stiffness, discomfort, and loss of energy. When a body functions optimally with gravity it requires less energy to function, has effortless good posture, and is able to breathe easily.

The true genius of her method is it utilizes the art and science of reshaping and reorganizing human structure according to clear principles in a systematic and consistent manner.

What is possible?

SI allows you to experience greater freedom of movement and an increased awareness of the body you live in. It is important to remember that each experience and the benefits will never be exactly the same from person to person because no two people are alike. As a result of SI, people often appear taller. Some actually gain anywhere from a quarter inch to over one inch in height. Feelings of discomfort or pain are often alleviated. Other benefits can include greater flexibility, feeling of lightness and fluidity, more stable balance, increased breathing capacity and energy, as well as greater self-confidence. While SI primarily targets physical change within the body, it also affects the whole person. We are made up of emotions, attitudes, belief systems, and behaviour patterns. All of these emotional and physical qualities are connected. Align the physical structure and it will expand the whole individual’s potential.

The Experience

SI is performed as a series of ten sessions. Each session is approximately one hour in length. You will receive maximum benefits if the sessions are held one per week for ten weeks in a row, but they can be completed over any length of time. The 10 Series is administered progressively – each session builds upon the last until integration is achieved.

The client completes a health questionnaire and shares their goals and intentions at the start of the first session. Male clients will wear underwear or a swimsuit, and women wear a two-piece swimsuit or bra and underwear. The practitioner will observe the client: watch how they stand, walk, and other general movements.

The client will be asked to breathe into the area being worked on or to make small, specific movements. During the work, the practitioner will help the client to become aware of habitual patterns of movement and imbalances in their body, and help each client make positive shifts and create healthier habits.

After the 10 Series is complete a client usually allows a period of time for the body to adapt and integrate before scheduling additional work. The waiting period can be anywhere from one month up to one year, based on the client’s needs. After the waiting period, the client can return for tune-up sessions or advanced sessions to further the process of integration. Some people do not want to do the 10 series and individual sessions (without committing to the 10 series) are available as well.
