Structural Integration (SI) is a therapeutic process to help you find an efficient way to live in your body. It is a system of bodywork that focuses on the effects of gravity by working with layers of connective tissue or fascia. Fascia surrounds the muscles, bones, and organs. The continuous pull of gravity, the stress of daily life, and past injuries can pull the body out of alignment. SI aligns the body by layering, lengthening, and realigning the fascia. As fascia is lengthened, more room is created and the muscles are able to work efficiently. The body moves into a structurally optimal position through an organized method of touch and movement education. This work may lead to physical, emotional, and psychological change. When a body is aligned it functions with ease.
The body naturally wants to organize and heal itself and SI helps this process. When the body becomes misaligned, the fascia gradually shortens, tightens, and adjusts to the imbalance. This creates inefficiency in the body that results in stiffness, discomfort, and loss of energy. When a body functions optimally with gravity it requires less energy to function, has effortless good posture, and is able to breathe easily.
As Dr. Rolf used to say:
"Anyone can take a body apart, very few know how to put it back together."
The true genius of her method is it utilizes the art and science of reshaping and reorganizing human structure according to clear principles in a systematic and consistent manner.
WHAT IS POSSIBLE?
SI allows you to experience greater freedom of movement and an increased awareness of the body you live in. It is important to remember that each experience and the benefits will never be exactly the same from person to person because no two people are alike. As a result of SI, people often appear taller. Some actually gain anywhere from a quarter inch to over one inch in height. Feelings of discomfort or pain are often alleviated. Other benefits can include greater flexibility, feeling of lightness and fluidity, more stable balance, increased breathing capacity and energy, as well as greater self-confidence. While SI primarily targets physical change within the body, it also affects the whole person. We are made up of emotions, attitudes, belief systems, and behaviour patterns. All of these emotional and physical qualities are connected. Align the physical structure and it will expand the whole individual’s potential.
“Structural Integration is about the whole person… The sensation of moving from weakness into strength, the exhilaration of owning a new part of oneself, the immediate and simultaneous re-education of one’s being and action with the joy of self-empowerment, waking up. These are the experiences of Structural Integration.
- Emmett Hutchins
WHAT IS EXPERIENCED DURING A SESSION?
SI is performed as a series of ten sessions. Each session is approximately one hour in length. You will receive maximum benefits if the sessions are held one per week for ten weeks in a row, but they can be completed over any length of time. The 10 Series is administered progressively – each session builds upon the last until integration is achieved.
The client completes a health questionnaire and shares their goals and intentions at the start of the first session. Male clients will wear underwear or a swimsuit, and women wear a two-piece swimsuit or bra and underwear. The practitioner will observe the client: watch how they stand, walk, and other general movements.
The client will be asked to breathe into the area being worked on or to make small, specific movements. During the work, the practitioner will help the client to become aware of habitual patterns of movement and imbalances in their body, and help each client make positive shifts and create healthier habits.
After the 10 Series is complete a client usually allows a period of time for the body to adapt and integrate before scheduling additional work. The waiting period can be anywhere from one month up to one year, based on the client’s needs. After the waiting period, the client can return for tune-up sessions or advanced sessions to further the process of integration. Some people do not want to do the 10 series and individual sessions (without committing to the 10 series) are available as well.

Working with Carly is a major life event, comparable to being married, divorced or having a baby. You will not be the same, however better. Her commitment to excellence shows in every session of the 10 part series. She is very professional in everything that she does. In every session, I received noticeable differences immediately. I was the victim of soft tissue damage in my neck, spine, back and shoulders. I had scar tissue in all of these areas. Carly's work removed the scar tissue in all of these parts. I am so pleased, that tears well up in my eyes. What is the value of having pain removed from your body? I cry every time I think of it. Wow what a blessing! Carly's work is a bargain! I reduced my pain medications, my happiness has soared, my energy levels has climbed, my attitude has greatly improved. I knew that Carly's work would subject me to immediate new pain (I was/am in chronic pain). I also knew that I would live through the process. I would do it all over again if I happen to develop more soft tissue injuries. Her services are well worth the benefits that I have received. Thank you Carly for your awesome service. One thousands kisses and hugs from someone that has greatly benefited from your skills. You are greatly appreciated. I have tears of joy as I write this for you.

About 10 years ago, I was told by my doctor that I had a congenital minor scoliosis, which had become symptomatic after my growth spurt when I was in high school. I had been receiving massage and Chiro about every 2-3 weeks since that time. The massage and Chiro helped for a short time period, but it didn't like it was actively creating changes in my body. It was resolving a temporary situation, not empowering my body to restructure the way in which it was supposed to be. Until I began Rolfing with Carly Rae, I began to notice these changes within my body. For example, I was never able to sleep on my side, and was able to after a few treatments with Rolfing. I had also been on dextroamphetamine medication (for treatment of ADD) and been able to decrease this by over 50% easily within the first few weeks of Rolfing treatment. My left shoulder has been lower than my right, which has caused an intense strain on my entire body. Since Rolfing, I can feel my shoulder actively realigning itself. The term 'active' is key. The difference between Rolfing and the massage/Chiro is that I can feel my body restructuring itself into the way it was meant to be. It's like there has been blockages within my body, that Rolfing has helped to re-open, and thus allow oxygen and nutrients to freely flow throughout my entire body. I have full confidence in Rolfing. Blockages in your own body's meridian channels not only can contribute to pain, but to various physical illnesses, depression, anxiety, insomnia and so on. I would recommend it for anyone. I write this to share the healing that I have found and encourage anyone to try Rolfing for themselves. Thank you Carly for working to the best of your ability in this field!! Very much needed and appreciated.

A year of chronic back pain doesn't sound like much compared to someone who's been living with it for 10 years, but when you go from being an elite level athlete to not being able to tie your own shoes with one poorly executed deadlift, it's more than enough. I spent a year mistreating an incredibly debilitating injury, constantly underestimating how much of an impact it was having on my life. February of 2015 I was a U of S Huskie football player prepping for the CIS East West Bowl, I was in the best shape of my life. Fast forward 9 months to the end of the 2015 football season, my football career had been derailed entirely. Injuries took down my season almost as soon as it began, and the emotional and psychological issues that came along with them ruined my relationship with a majority of the coaching staff as well as my relationship with my girlfriend at the time. I had become, physically, a shell of my former self. Psychologically however, I was in much worse shape. With a few unfortunate events unfolding throughout the season, I was beginning to shut out numerous important people in my life. I had become a downright angry, pessimistic person. Once I made the decision to quit the team, I took some time to myself, in an effort to get my head right. In the coming weeks I would continue the search for a solution to my back problems, as well. Over the course of a year I tried every pain treatment I could find, spending well over 2500 dollars in the process. While some treatments looked promising at first, in the end, they all came to a dead end. Then one day, I accidentally clicked a Facebook add entitled 'Carly Rae'. I ended up reading up on the page and became intrigued due to some of the success stories. I figured, with most other non-surgical options exhausted, I may as well give it a shot. I remember laying down in my first appointment, unsure of what was really going on. To me it seemed like just another massage. By the next morning however, I had felt something I hadn't felt in over a year: Pain free. Now I'm not saying I was 100 percent but I had found hope in something for the first time since the injury. I decided to work through the 10 series and here we are, 3 hours out of my last treatment and I am pain free, dare I say 100 percent (knock on wood) and I have Carly to thank for that. I have no intentions to return to football, but knowing I could if I so desire is very reassuring. It may sound dramatic but I have an entirely new outlook on life. My body hasn't felt this good in a long time and I haven't been this much at peace in years. The benefits I've seen physically, emotionally and psychologically from Carly's treatment have been incredible, and I would recommend anyone dealing with pain to go see her. It was the best decision I've made in a long time, worth every penny and has literally changed my life. Thank you Carly.

I have had movement issues in my right leg and hip from 4 surgeries on my right leg. Two were from a broken leg at 14 where a pin was inserted and removed and the other two were from compartment syndrome surgery in 2011. I started the ten sessions in November 2013 to help with my leg and hip, and after the first two sessions I noticed significant results in other areas of my body. My lung capacity improved and I didn't need to use my inhaler as much as I did before.
Then after every session there were different types of improvements in my total body movement, structure, and feeling. Pain in my lower back and hip were reduced significantly and I was able to stretch further and deeper which also helped with pain. I could move more freely during daily activities ie: bending, reaching, and twisting.
My sports life greatly improved, I was able to drop 8 strokes off my golf game and had increased balance agility and stability in hockey. My sleeping habits were changed also. Instead of needing 8-10 hrs of sleep 6 or 7 were enough because I wasn't tossing and turning in pain at night.
Anyone looking for a life changing experience should definitely look into Rolfing Structural Integration. It will be one of the best decisions of your life.
